The Danish company Carl Hansen & Søn was founded in October 1908, when cabinetmaker Carl Hansen opened his first workshop in Odense, Denmark. A few years later, Hansen opened his first real factory specializing in bedroom furniture for the bourgeoisie and landed gentry on the island of Funen. His craftsmanship and passion for woodworking soon led Hansen to become well known in the area and to receive many requests for his new business. Carl Hansen & Søn is the company behind many furniture designs by leading figures of the Danish modern movement. Most of the chairs by Carl Hansen & Søn were indeed designed in the ‘50s-‘60s-‘70s and represent timeless models, destined to become more and more precious as time goes by. Carl Hansen & Søn is a family-run business expanding through generations and represents an icon of the Nordic – and global – industrial design. Woodworking has always been at the core of the company, which states that every single product is 80% handmade by a team of over two hundred carpenters using wood from responsibly managed Danish forests only. The centenarian Danish company owes its fame to the family-owned business, to the scrupulous craftsmanship of its artisans, and to the partnership with some of the most influential masters of the past and the most prominent contemporary designers.
Carl Hansen & Søn mainly offers furniture for the living area, creating products that are elegant, refined, tied to tradition and to an almost-exclusive use of wood, reminding of pure Nordic design.
