Gatto is a table lamp with extremely contemporary lines and you will find it hard to believe when we tell you that it was born in 1960, but it will probably all become clearer when we reveal that it was designed by the Castiglioni brothers and masters.
Gatto gives life to its particular shape by moulding white painted steel filaments and then coats it with Cocoon resin. It was 1960, the war had been over for a few years and in a still devastated Italy there were those who believed that the time had come to bring their nation to the centre of a cultural ferment: Dino Gavina and his still unripe Flos. In the small workshop in Merano they sought to revolutionise and create what is now the history of Italian design. Experimentation with new materials, new forms, new concepts. This is how a series of lamps made of Cocoon resin by the Castiglioni brothers was born. Cocoon was an unexplored material, used until that day to protect US army packaging, but Flos discovered that when sprayed onto a metal frame, this resin created an artificial, hazy, atmospheric cloud through which light filtered.
Gatto's story is unparalleled, the table lamp of the Italian company Flos, together with other projects, represents the foundation of what we today proudly call Italian design.
