The Zeppelin 1 suspension lamp was created in 2005 by designer Marcel Wanders and is an addition to the collection of Cocoon resin lamps by the Italian company Flos. The conta collection was born together with the company and is still one of its cornerstones, boasting names such as the Castiglioni brothers, Michael Anastassiades and Marcel Wanders.
A white painted steel frame faithfully reproduces the archetype of the elegant salon chandelier with candles and tapered, curved arms. The structure of Zeppelin 1 is then covered with Cocoon resin through a special, time-consuming craftsmanship process. Once dried, the resin creates a textured, uneven surface on which every grain can be seen. Needless to say, the effect of Zeppelin 1, once lit from within, is striking and verges on the surreal. A facetted crystal sphere is positioned centrally in the lower part of the lamp, increasing its brilliance.
Cocoon resin was discovered in the 1950s by the Castiglioni brothers, who used it for the first time in design. The famous material had until then been used by the US Army for packing and protecting its equipment. These are the oldest origins of the famous Zeppelin 1 pendant lamp.
