THE HISTORY OF FLOS

The lighting company Flos was founded in Merano, Italy, in the early ‘60s. In a country impoverished and torn apart by the war, Dino Gavina’s desire to turn the tables and enhance Italy’s creative and industrial fervor resulted in the establishment of the brand. Dino Gavina, already working in the sector, soon became one of the most prominent entrepreneurs in the indoor furniture sector and Made in Italy design; he realized that Italy had the impellent urge to gather innovative ideas and unique projects and in 1962, with the help of the famous Castiglioni and Scarpa brothers, the lighting company Flos was born. Sergio Gandini soon joined the team and quickly became chief executive officer before being appointed president of the company. The first series of lamps in Cocoon, a type of resin that had only been used by the U.S. Army to pack and protect their equipment, represented the first example of the typical experimental mark of the company. This represented an absolute innovation in a world where lamps were only used for their functional purpose and their design was commonly overlooked. A revolution was taking place: one that saw art permeating our everyday life. Flos became the supreme leader in the lighting sector and Italy was consequently recognized as the undisputed global leader in the industrial design sector. At the 1972 “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape” exhibition at the MoMA in New York, Flos was acknowledged as a globally admired and desired avant-gardist enterprise, thus confirming its rank overseas and internationally too. In the following years, Flos soon created the most acclaimed iconic designs on the Italian and international scene. When in the ‘80s new technologies and new production techniques were introduced in the market, Flos was capable to ride the waves of change and, with the help of Gandini’s young son, launched the most nonconformist and avant-gardist designer of the moment: Philippe Starck. The risks taken by the company were met with the approval of many worldwide and this encouraged Flos to keep up with the constant evolution of the artistic scene. The innovations granted fame to Flos, which decided to partner with the most promising international designers, forming a creative team comprised of Marc Newson, Jasper Morrison, Konstantin Grcic. Gandini’s son Piero succeeded his late father as the leader of the company, allowing it to maintain the same creative and entrepreneurial ideas that had guided Flos until that moment and bringing a breath of avant-gardist air into the company. Unlike other companies, Flos now uses LED technology and integrates it in its designs to provide its customers with the best solutions available on the market.
