The Cassina Civil Bench continues the refined study of Chandigarh's city furnishings, becoming part of the Hommage à Pierre Jeanneret collection. A line that celebrates the encounter between European modernism and Indian tradition through essential forms and authentic materials.Â
Designed between 1955 and 1956 for the apartments of members of the Indian Legislative Assembly, the bench consists of three consecutive seats supported by a front crossbar and two inverted V-shaped side supports, a distinctive element that defines its formal and architectural identity.
The structure is made of solid Burmese oak or teak, while the woven Vienna straw seat blends harmoniously with the rigorous geometry of the wood. The use of straw, common in the region, recalls the use of local materials and strengthens the link with the cultural and geographical context.
Essential in its lines but powerful in its presence, the Cassina Civil Bench expresses the craftsmanship in transforming natural materials into an object with a strong visual impact. Elegant and welcoming, it fits naturally into the living room, private spaces or reception areas, inviting contemplation and becoming a symbol of sculptural design and timeless authenticity.
