Cassina's Nuage bookcase, designed by Charlotte Perriand in 1940, was born from a poetic intuition: the observation of shelves arranged in the shape of a cloud on the walls of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. From this vision, the French designer developed the concept of free modularity, based on functionality, aesthetics and usability.
Nuage is a double-sided or wall-mounted bookcase, a freestanding composition that can be suspended or placed in the centre of the room as a sculptural element. Its free form punctuates the space and enhances the objects, thanks to the compositional richness derived from the dynamic assembly of its elements. The horizontal shelves alternate between open compartments and storage spaces, which can be customised in a variety of colour finishes, creating a fascinating and rhythmic visual picture.
Made of solid wood blockboard veneered in natural or black-stained oak with a low-gloss finish, the bookcase is also available in a version with modules closed by doors, available in anodised aluminium or in a wide range of colours. This interplay of solids and voids stimulates the imagination and introduces a refined visual balance.
The asymmetrical design and modular logic make the Cassina Nuage bookcase extremely versatile: it can be transformed into a sideboard, storage unit, wall bookcase, suspended composition or freestanding structure. In the living room, it is both an artistic and functional object, capable of decorating the wall with flair and offering storage space to keep things tidy in style.
