Designed by Paavo Tynell, one of the greatest masters of metalwork and a pioneer of modern lighting, the Gubi 9209 table lamp was created during a period when the spread of electric lighting opened up new design possibilities. Elegant and exquisite, it illuminates and adorns a space with the same grace as a piece of jewellery, whilst preserving the luminous poetry that characterises Tynell’s work.
The lampshade, with its distinctive shape and crafted from drawn brass, earned it the Finnish nickname Kypärä — ‘helmet’. Supported by a rattan-wrapped stem that ends in a curved brass arm, the lampshade is individually shaped and decorated with triangular perforation patterns, an aesthetic signature of Tynell. Their creation requires a dedicated punching tool and absolute manual precision. As well as directing the light downwards, the small holes allow tiny beams of light to filter through, creating a soft glow and a twinkle reminiscent of the stars.
The Gubi 9209 table lamp brings a refined yet distinctive presence to any space, blending naturally into both classic interiors and contemporary settings. Its soft light and exquisite design create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal companion for the living room, reading area or spaces dedicated to relaxation.
