The Kairo armchair was created in 2009, designed and studied in detail by international designer Karim Rashid for the Italian brand Riva 1920. The distinctive double arch shape carved into the armchair draws its inspiration from a trip the designer made to Egypt, where he was impressed by these lines as if they were to form an eye.
The manufacturing process of the Kairo armchair is roughly divided into three stages: the block of solid cedar, which has already been squared, is placed inside a special machine that will shape the wood to the desired form. To obtain the final shape of the chair, the machine will work continuously on the single block of cedar for over 8 hours. The final sanding, done by hand, takes another four hours.
It is a sculptural monolith characterised by its enveloping shape in a line of continuity between seat and backrest. The Kairo armchair by Riva 1920 is a completely natural product, without the addition of any treatment. Any movements, cracks and changes in the condition of the wood are an essential characteristic of this furniture and are due to natural settling and different environmental conditions.
