Artemide's Eclisse lamp, designed in 1965 by Vico Magistretti, is an icon of Italian design that revolutionised the concept of lighting, winning the prestigious Compasso d'Oro award in 1967. With its unique shape and innovative functionality, Eclisse represents a perfect balance between aesthetics and utility, becoming a symbol of modern design worldwide.
Eclisse's distinguishing feature is its light adjustment system: a rotating inner shade that 'eclipses' the light source, allowing for direct or diffused light as required. This mechanism, with a fixed outer envelope and a movable inner envelope, gives the lamp unparalleled versatility, making it suitable for various environments and situations.
Available as a table lamp, Eclisse can also be wall mounted, easily adapting to different space configurations. The painted metal body is available in a wide range of colours, including white, red, orange and yellow, but also in more sophisticated finishes such as PVD (vacuum metal deposition), which includes black, brass, copper and mirror variants. This innovative technology not only enhances the aesthetics of the product, but is also environmentally friendly, minimising harmful emissions and using metals that are not harmful to health.
Eclisse's concern for the environment also extends to the protective coating, which uses a solid paint with 5% solvents, significantly less than traditional processes. Furthermore, waste generated by the production process is minimal, making Eclisse an environmentally friendly choice.
Thanks to its timeless design, Eclisse has become part of the permanent collection of prestigious design museums, including the MoMA in New York and the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, cementing its place as one of the most emblematic lamps in the history of contemporary design.
