The Utrecht armchair by Cassina was designed by Gerrit T. Rietveld in 1935 for the Metz & Co. department store in Amsterdam. The Dutch designer was commissioned to create a chair for mass production that would combine industrial requirements with comfort and relaxation. The result was a composition of distinct, well-defined elements that embody Rietveld's experimental vision and the principles of the Neoplastic movement.
The armchair faithfully reproduces the formal language of the original design, adapting the proportions to the changing ergonomic requirements of the last 80 years. The backrest, slightly inclined to offer greater support, rests directly on the floor, as does the deep and generously padded seat. Two inverted L-shaped elements serve as armrests, emphasising the rigorous and minimalist geometry of the design.
The supporting structure of the seat and backrest is made of tubular steel, with elastic straps and padding in polyurethane foam and polyester wadding to ensure optimal comfort. The upholstery, which perfectly follows the lines of the armchair, is embellished with decorative horse-shoe or zig-zag stitching, which enhances its handcrafted character.
