The Semi Pendant lamp by Gubi was created in 1968 as the result of a creative collaboration between Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup. At a time dominated by the soft, organic forms of the so-called ‘era of comfort’, the two designers chose to respond with a bold statement: to create a lighting fixture based on clean lines, geometric precision and a minimalist silhouette. Presented at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, the project won first prize and, in the 1980s, became one of the greatest successes of Danish design, gaining international recognition that cemented its iconic status.
The Semi Pendant is defined by its unique shape, created by joining two quarter-circles back-to-back, which forms an arched shade in enamelled metal. The light, diffused downwards in a soft, controlled cone, makes it ideal above a dining table or worktop, where it creates a welcoming yet precise atmosphere.
Lightweight, minimalist and timeless, the Gubi Semi Pendant lamp stands out for its versatility: available in various sizes and a rich palette of colours, it adapts naturally to both private and public interiors, harmonising with classic, modern or contemporary styles. Whatever the setting, it always maintains its understated elegance, avoiding any sense of banality and bringing a perfect balance of form, light and presence to the space.
