The Parentesi lamp by the Italian company Flos was conceived by Pio Manzù, designed by Achille Castiglioni, and produced by the famous company in 1971. To this day, it remains one of the most important icons of Italian industrial design worldwide and is part of the permanent collections of some of the world's most important museums.
At Pio Manzù's untimely death, the still unripe design of what was later the Parentesi lamp was found by Achille Castiglioni. He studied it and carefully modified it until he obtained the form we can see today. A steel cable is stretched from the ceiling to the floor, above it is placed a special shaped steel tube to which a light bulb is attached. The metal tube had the task of sliding the structure on the cable according to the user's needs and was specially designed to lock into the desired position once released without the use of fasteners. The popular Parentesi lamp is available in a version with or without a dimmer switch for greater control of light intensity. You can choose from different colors for the metal tube such as white, black, nickel or red.
It is needless to explain why this lamp became a symbol of an Italy dedicated to beauty, design, fashion, history and culture. Parentesi by the Italian company Flos is still part of the permanent collection of the Triennale Design Museum in Milan and the Moma in New York. In 1979 it won the Compasso D'Oro award i.e., the oldest and most prestigious design award in the world.
