The Cassina 699 Superleggera chair has been in continuous production since 1957, embodying the perfect combination of Gio Ponti's design vision and the company's ongoing technical experimentation. A masterpiece of modernity and craftsmanship, it has become a timeless symbol of Italian design.
Its construction challenge lies in the triangular section of the legs, which are extremely thin—just 18 millimetres—contributing to a surprisingly low weight of only 1,700 grams. The structure, made of flexible and lightweight ash wood, is combined with a more compact and resistant beech wood seat frame, ensuring solidity and durability. Each machine-worked wooden element is finished by hand with artisan care: brush gluing, meticulous cleaning of the glue and traditional straw seating. The result is a 'primitive object', inspired by Ligurian Chiavari chairs, available in the classic version or in coloured variants with upholstered seating.
Extremely light both to the eye and to the touch, the Cassina 699 Superleggera chair stands out for its slim silhouette and essential elegance. Perfect around a dining table or as a decorative element in a corner of the home, it represents a minimalist and functional approach to everyday furniture, rising to become an absolute icon of contemporary design.
